Something unprecedented has been happening in California’s implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). An expanding cadre of leaders have crossed conventional boundaries to align efforts on implementing high-quality science learning for all California students.

Based on interviews with two dozen prominent state science education leaders, this brief (wested.org/resources/future-of-california-science/) tells the story of how leaders set aside conventional parochial agendas in favor of united action to: forge new organizational structures to implement the NGSS at scale; create and deliver innovative statewide NGSS professional learning opportunities and implementation resources, for both teachers and administrators; and deliver trainings on a rigorous process for selecting high-quality, NGSS-aligned instructional materials.
