Thinkers Series: Leah Shakdiel

The artists began their residencies in Israel with an exploratory mission, in which they traveled throughout Israel and the West Bank and met with a variety of thinkers. 'This Place' initiator Frederic Brenner later filmed interviews with many of these thinkers. Here are some highlights from this interview series.

Leah Shakdiel is an Israeli peace activist and feminist scholar. Through teaching and her involvement with numerous Israeli NGOs, she works to bring the values of peace, human rights and social justice to the next generation of Israelis. In 1988 she became Israel's first female member of a local religious council, following a struggle that ended with a landmark Supreme Court decision. Since 1978 she has lived with her family in Yeruham, a development town in the Negev desert committed to halacha (Jewish law), social responsibility, peace, and ecology.
