Philip Carlson On Behalf Of Talent
Chosen as an Editor's Pick by theatlantic.com and video of the day by studiodaily.com. Official selection of The Harlem International Film Festival (2017) and ArtSlope Film Festival (2019). Winner of the Personal Stories prize at the Chain Film Festival (2017) and winner of the Emerging Documentary prize at the Bucks Fever Film Festival (2017).
Philip Carlson was the first talent agent to sign Philip Seymour Hoffman, Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, Liev Schreiber, Idris Elba and many more talented actors. He was a manager then agent for nearly 30 years based in New York City at small agencies.
After my friend, the publisher Glenn Young, gave me Phil's book Breaking and Entering: A Manual for the Working Actor, I asked to meet with Phil to record some of his stories.
Phil's lifetime work of finding raw talent before anyone else and then standing by that person through thick and thin struck a chord. I started out as an actor and have deep respect for the craft.
Phil's incredible nose for talent, his loyalty and his dedication to actors comprise a story that I'm thrilled to tell.
I am grateful to the actors who donated their time to this project. The Atlantic published the video here:
