Brook Hair Presentation - 2015 Branner Fellowship Arch Lecture

Brook Hair, House/Museum
Brook Hair studied painting at Brown University. She grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and lived in New Orleans prior to coming to Berkeley.

The house museum is effectively a form of representation. Just as the drawing of a building is not the building, the house museum is no longer the house. While it holds it’s own in exposing and penetrating the minds of architects, our understanding of domestic space is shaped by the curation, restoration, and re-purposing of a house into a museum. Put simply, the clutter of everyday life is evacuated, and even a semblance of prior use risks in-authenticity. This proposal poses a question: how does one critically analyze curation that is both the product of pre- and post-occupancy?
