"The Parent Trap" - What's the trap?
The Parent Trap is a new book by economist and data scientist Nate Hilger. Nate details a number of traps that prevent us from supporting parents effectively. The first trap is our unrealistic expectation that parents should be able to manage the vast majority of child skill development on their own. The second trap is that we make it impossible to talk about this unrealistic expectation by accusing anyone who questions it of failure or arrogance. The third trap is that too many parents have been tricked into focusing on their smaller disagreements at the expense of their much larger shared interests. Together these traps have undermined the capacity of parents to demand the public support they need and deserve to give their children a fair shot at success.
