The Artist Was A Woman
“The Artist Was A Woman: 1550-1950,” funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a groundbreaking history of the achievements of women artists from Sofanisba Anguissola to Georgia O’Keeffe, narrated by Jane Alexander. The hour documentary premiered on PBS and A&E, then won the American Women in Radio and Television Award, and prizes at San Francisco, Melbourne, and American Film Festivals, and aired in 32 countries. Filmed in art galleries throughout Europe and America, the film combines images of the artists’ works with rare footage of their actual studios, the cities where they lived, and grave sites still visited by their admirers. Quotations from the letters and diaries of these women are introduced by art historians Linda Nochlin, Ann Sutherland Harris and Germain Greer.
