Jean Jacques Thomas "Apollinaire il pleut 3D"
The Calligram "Il pleut" by Apollinaire started as an attempt to create a grammophone record of sound poetry that would capture polyphonic poetic realization better than the book could. Taking a lead of "simultaneism" as proposed by Barzun, Apollinaire wrote three "polyphonic" versions of the poem. Finally he sent it as a "poetic letter" to a friend and asked the avant-garde journal SIC to create an adequate typography. That is the spatial calligram that we know.
This is an attempt to unify both the polyphonic original intentions of Apollinaire and, using contemporary digital editing, to produce a graphic 3D rendering of the poem that would allow a reading of the text as it moves from top to bottom and remain readable.
In an PS3 or Xbox environment anyone with a joystick is able to manipulate the 3D text to give it the shape one wants, even to wander into the text that composes the "rain".
It is part of a general experiment to reinterpret earlier texts that show a clear intent to exist on different type of support beyond the "white page" and paper support.Direction and conception Jean Jacques Thomas, The State University of New York.
