Surviving Surveillance, Catering to America: Making Biryani
The film short, “Surviving Surveillance, Catering to America: Beef Biryani,” is a visual morsel of Shahina cooking. Despite her hardships, Shahina persists. She creates and delivers complex, nuanced flavor and tastes. She nourishes. The cooking provides a familiar focus, a break, and the possibility to recreate culture and share, in a part of the world that finds her, and her kind, distasteful.
The film short is part of larger body of work supported by the Asian Women Giving Circle and Asian Americans Writers Workshop Open City Fellowship. Watch the prequel to this film about Shahina Parveen's struggle: vimeo.com/206621760
