Ron Haviv: Utilizing Photography in the Classroom, Foundry Photojournalism Workshop 2013

Speaking from the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop in Sarajevo, Bosnia, photographer Ron Haviv explains a useful role for photography and photographers in the world of education. As part of the Telling History Project with the Children’s Movement for Creative Education, Ron brought his photos into high schools to teach human rights and conflict resolution. His photos worked as a conversation starter and built bridges across cultures: “We went into inner city schools — schools that were broken apart because of gangs — and when explaining to them the story of the former Yugoslavia or Darfur or Rwanda, they actually understood it in a very special and quick way because it really mirrored their own lives,” he says.

Award-winning photojournalist Ron Haviv has produced some of the most important images of conflict and other humanitarian crises that have made headlines from around the world since the end of the Cold War. Haviv is a co-founder of the photo agency VII which is dedicated to documenting conflict, both violent and non-violent, to produce and unflinching record of the injustices created and experienced by people caught up in the events they describe.
