STEAM PS 127 - 1min

The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) is committed to creating a pipeline into fields such as Architecture, Engineering and Construction.

Through participation in DDC’s various outreach programs, young people gain exposure to careers in the built environment and acquire the skills necessary to be successful and competitive in the 21st century global economy. The STEAM Initiatives Division was created in November of 2014 to establish a path for New York City’s youth into the architecture, engineering, and construction fields. DDC’s Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives has afforded the Agency the ability to partner with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), the School Construction Authority (SCA) and other Community Partners to launch several new programs focused on youth.

Our outreach programs create experiential opportunities for students to learn about the built environment and its contribution to New York City, as well as to enhance student awareness of these fields beginning in middle school through high school, college, graduate school, and the professions.

DDC’s STEAM Initiatives will expand opportunities for young people – particularly women and minorities, who are underrepresented in the scientific and technological fields. The afterschool curriculum Engineering Everywhere was developed by Engineering is Elementary®, which is a project of the National Center for Technological Literacy at the Museum of Science, Boston.
