James Madison's Montpelier
Northern Light Productions was part of the design/build team that created the new permanent exhibition for Montpelier, the home of James Madison: Father of the Constitution, Architect of the Bill of Rights, fourth President of the United States, and slaveholder. These exhibits explore Madison’s celebrated contributions to our nation while exploring his challenging legacy around slavery. In “The Mere Distinction of Colour,” we created a 5-screen installation linking the past heritage of the enslaved to the racial turmoil of the present. “Fate in the Balance” recreates a first-person account as charcoal-inscribed animation telling the multi-faceted story of a life enslaved. “Consider Our Lives” is a touchscreen interactive where visitors choose to hear contemporary experts answer specific questions about the life of the enslaved and their legacy.
