An Update on Conventional and Integrative Medicine for Management & Prevention of Osteoarthritis (Module 10.6)

Module 10.6 is part 6 of a 12 part series on using medical therapeutic yoga in orthopaedics and promotion of systemic wellness through healthy gastrointestinal function and how it relates to joint function.

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in American adults today. What’s worse is the percentage of adult Americans expected to suffer from OA is projected to skyrocket to a historic high of 20% by the year 2030.

Yet, a standardized holistic therapeutic model for management in rehabilitation has yet to be developed. However, this CE proposes Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) methodology for adoption of a holistic model which will address all facets of a person’s health and well-being. The standardized method of Professional Yoga Therapy offers multiple interventions for holistic and natural management of OA in the general and rehabilitation populations.

Practitioners and patients alike can benefit from this CE course, since its methods will be applicable for all patient populations. This CE will review epidemiology, identify high risk populations and risk factors for development of OA, and identify critical new developments in research concerning inflammatory processes in the body which greatly impact rehabilitation and prevention and wellness programming.

This CE will evaluate 21 yoga postures and other CIM therapies for the therapist in acute and subactute or chronic phases. Direct application through postural evaluation in each of the seven major areas of OA will give the clinician the tools necessary for immediate intervention in the OA population.

Professional Yoga Therapy has been leading the way in medical yoga since 2001 with its grassroots programs in post-graduate evidence-based medical therapeutic yoga. PYT standardizes methodology for evaluation and management in prevention and pathophysiology through education in evidence based CAM modalities, specifically medical therapeutic yoga.
