UAB Media Studies students created short documentary films about the Civil Rights Movement as part of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the events of 1963 in Birmingham.

The first Black police officer to serve on the Birmingham force, which was heavily Klan-affiliated, faced discrimination on the job, but helped break an institution that did not protect and serve all Birmingham citizens. Birmingham's all-white police did not aggressively investigate the many bombings and shootings of activists' homes and churches, and, at times, actively participated in threats, beatings, and harassment throughout Black neighborhoods.
