Robotic Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

On March 3, 1997, Jacques Himpens, MD, PhD, successfully performed the first “robotic” laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a 52-year old female patient who suffered from symptomatic cholecystolithiasis. It was performed at some 10 yards away from the patient, while he sat at the master’s console. The name of the prototype robot was Mona (Intuitive, Mountain View, California) in analogy with the Mona Lisa, Da Vinci’s masterpiece.
