Augmented Eight

A group of Washington-area professional men singing original arrangements of modern and old-time favorites, including Broadway show tunes. The group has been entertaining Washington audiences since 1950, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2010, and has sung nationally, in governors’ mansions from Richmond to Denver, at the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian, and at presidential inaugural celebrations. The Augmented Eight is a founding member of the American A Cappella Alliance and performs around the country at the alliance’s annual Spring Sing weekend. Each year the Augmented Eight sponsors the Sing Out for Shelter Concert to support organizations dedicated to helping the local homeless population. In October 2010, the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place honored the Augmented Eight with the 13th annual Benjamin E. Cooper Award recognizing outstanding contributions by members of the Washington, D.C., community to the cause of ending homelessness.
