Gabrielle Vehar: Putting Her Back Into History
Putting Her Back Into History
Video Installation at Tompkins County Public Library, Ithaca NY
The Tompkins County Public Library hosted "Putting Her Back Into History" for Women’s History Month, in March of 2017. In this interactive video installation by filmmaker Sue Perlgut, 44 women from Tompkins County shared their advice and wisdom in video interviews, and more than 40 women shared their wisdom on paper from an online survey taken in 2016. The project was installed on monitors in the library so that viewers could watch one or all of the interviews. There were notebooks of the written survey answers for people to read and a notebook to record one’s own wisdom. This installation celebrated the documentation of women’s lives in the early part of the 20th and 21st century in recognition of the fact that earlier histories took little account of women’s experience. In the past women weren’t asked--they recorded their lives in their journals, many of which did not survive. Using video will guarantee that these voices will be available to all generations now and in the future. This work is possible, in part, with funding from the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County and New York State Council on the Arts and the Tompkins County Library Foundation.
