The Great Escape Camp

Video profile on the "Great Escape Camp" - Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland. Originally part of Upper Silesia, Germany, this was a POW camp for captured Allied airmen during World War II. The so-called Great Escape took place during the night of 24-25 March, 1944. RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bushell conceived and organized a massive escape of 200 prisoners; although different factors delayed the escape and only 76 got out of the 334-foot long tunnel, dug 30 feet below the surface. Out of those who experienced brief freedom, only three men made it to safety. Everyone else was re-captured, rounded up, and 50 men were executed by the GESTAPO. The story was the subject of many books and films, including John Sturges' "The Great Escape" (1963). Visit Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland on Alpventures Wolf's Lair Tour.
