  4. Australia's Finke River valley

Scientists say the Finke River, west of Alice Springs Australia, is the world's oldest river to still run on its original course. Its "jurassic" landscape contains Sandstone gorges, ancient cycad plants and preserves a remnant of the rainforest that once covered the Australian outback. The natural springs in this small, isolated valley have allowed the Livingstonia palm to survive continuously for thousands of years against all odds. The nearest place to find these palms beyond this valley is now way beyond the arid deserts, 1000km to the North.
