The excellent guest speaker was Col. William Gavan. He graduated from West Point in 1962 and chose the infantry for his branch of service. He served with distinction with the 25th Infantry Division from 1963 to 1966 where he commanded “C” Company, 2/27 Infantry in Vietnam in 1966. During that year he was awarded the Purple Heart with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Silver Star and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He had three tours of duty in South Vietnam serving as a platoon leader, company commander, Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of the 25th Infantry Division and as a Senior Advisor to a Vietnamese Reconnaissance Battalion. His peacetime assignments include Deputy Commandant, United States Military Academy Preparatory School; Tactical Officer United States Military Academy; Battalion Commander 1/13 Infantry; Chief Force Modernization Division, Office of the Army Inspector General; Chief of Staff, 3rd Infantry Division; Commander 29th Infantry Regiment; Chief of Staff Fort Dix Army Training Center and Assistant Division Commander, 9th Infantry Division. Col Gavan attended North Carolina State University and received a Master’s Degree in Education. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army War College. Col Gavan retired in 1992 after 30 years of service. He and his wife Kathryn now live east of Atlanta near the town of Greensboro where he is an avid Bass fisherman on Lake Oconee.
