Map for the Future: Measuring Radiation Levels

At this Cal Poly Science Cafe, offered in partnership with the Data Studio, we explored the question, “What if we could provide data to empower communities to make their own assessments about safety?” with Yoh Kawano. The question was considered in the framework of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station explosion triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. During the event we participated in a simulated crowd-sourced experiment to leverage Twitter in a time of disaster.

Yoh Kawano works at the UCLA GIS and Visualization Sandbox for the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE), serving as the Campus GIS Coordinator while holding lecturer positions in the School of Public Affairs and the Center for Digital Humanities.
